Does your LinkedIn profile picture support your story?

LinkedIn-Profile-Picture-Training-Coaching-Petra Fisher-LinkedIn TipHow old is your profile picture? Has it been part of your LinkedIn profile since 2010? Fat chance you’ve uploaded a 80×80 pixels picture. You weren’t able to upload something bigger back then. Late 2011 LinkedIn changed this!

Go ahead and mouse over the picture on my LinkedIn profile.

linkedin-profile-picture-petra fisher-training-linkedin-coachingYou’ll notice a magnifying glass with a [+] appear. Now if you click my picture you will see a decent size profile picture. LinkedIn is a network site, might as well have a good look at who you’re talking to right?

Make sure your picture is neutral. Not passport, please don’t smile neutral. Just no kids, holiday scenes, sunglasses or cat neutral. Look straight into the camera and smile! People do business with people, your LinkedIn profile picture is a perfect opportunity to make a great first impression!

So how to add a picture to your LinkedIn profile?

  • Mouse over [Profile] and click [Edit Profile]
  • Now click [Change Photo] underneath your picture or [Add Photo] if you haven’t added a profile picture yet
  • Click the grey [Choose File]button
  • Browse your computer to find your picture. LinkedIn states that you can upload a JPG, GIF or PNG file (File size limit is 4 MB)
  • Click the blue [Upload Photo] button
  • The next screen allows you to crop your picture. Use the yellow outline for this. Your LinkedIn profile picture is always square
  • Time to click [Save Settings]
  • Next LinkedIn asks you who is allowed to see your picture (My connections | My Network | Everyone). My advise: Everyone!
  • Finish by clicking the blue  [Save Settings] button and you’re done!
