Moving sections around on LinkedIn isn’t new.
So why write about it now? Because plenty of people don’t know about it yet. And … because things have changed recently (December 2014). So just two short tips in this post.
1. Move sections on your LinkedIn profile
After your summary, LinkedIn displays your work experience. That might be just how you like it. It not ‘grab’ the section you want to display first and drag it in position. It is as simple as that. Just go into edit mode first.
2. Rearrange multiple ‘current positions’ on your LinkedIn profile
This one got me stumped this week. I developed a great eLearning LinkedIn Program and added my position as Studytube expert to my profile. I still want my own company to display first, so I needed to drag it back up to the top. And lo and behold the little icon was nowhere to be found. Guess what? You now need to drag some shaded/dotted area on the left!
Hi Petra,
I have 2 current positions I want t o re-arrange but I can’t find the icon with horizontal lines, nor the shaded/dotted area you mentioned. Is it still possible to re-arrange? Does it require a Premium account? Thanks a lot.
Ah yes, this article is nearly 5 years old. With 2 current positions move your mouse on one of them to the right, underneath the pencil. Magically the “hamburger menu” (three horizontal lines) should appear. You can then click and drag to move.
hello,
I have numerous certificates and licenses. I have tried and tried to rearrange them in order of importance. I can’t ever get the “hamburger menu” to appear. the least relevant?important continues to remain at the top. I have tried retyping the most relevant hoping it will rise to the top….. to no avail. what am I doing wrong?
This has changed since they gave certificates and licenses their own area. There they appear in chronological order. Have to remember this article is from 2014 and LinkedIn changes multiple times a year. 🙂

Hello Petra,
In my Experience section, I have four (4) Media entries for ad campaigns I’ve worked on. But they only display two at a time. The two that appear on the ‘Next’ page are the ones I would like to appear first. Can I move or change the sequence of these without deleting and reinstalling them? Many thanks. Be well. Dennis
Ahhhh one of my peeves at the moment. We cannot reorder media. You’ll have to delete and upload in order. A real pain in the proverbial. Now that the LinkedIn product engineers seem to change functionality more regularly than their underwear lets just hope they quickly fix this.
Thank you. It is disappointing but I won’t waste time deleting and re-importing all over again. Thanks for your assistance.
Is there any way to reorder media in the profile? the post here is dated 2017 – hoping that changes have been made since then in the media section to allow re-ordering without deleting everything and uploading again in correct order.
Hi Joe, not sure how your comment/question ended up on this 2014 post! The 2017 post about media lives here: https://petrafisher.com/linkedin-profile/5-clever-ways-use-media-linkedin/ To answer your question: we still cannot rearrange media. Have to go through the tedious process of deleting first and then uploading in desired order.
Hi. I have my business logo as my cover image but removed my personal photo. However, the circle space for my photo is slap bang on top of my cover logo. I don’t mind having my photo but I’d like it to appear somewhere else or just to remove the circle.
Any ideas please?
This is not possible. LinkedIn is all about networking and a personal profile has a personal picture. Would you walk up to someone at a party with a paper bag over their head? Or trust them to conduct business with? It is great to use the banner to focus on your business, but the profile is personal and needs a decent headshot of you.
I added a lot of volunteer positions to my work profile before there was a separate section for volunteer positions. Is there a way to move these positions tot he volunteer experience section without deleting and reentering all the information?
Hi Coby, This is going to require just what you were hoping to avoid. Copy paste the info to the volunteer section and then delete the experience. It is up to you though where you want it to be. Sometimes a role fulfilled as a volunteer is so valuable, that you might prefer to have it in the experience section.
I recently received a good recommendation associated with a previous job. But, now it is the first recommendation that people see on my profile. I would like to change that. I went to “view profile”, hoping to change the order of recommendations, but I was not able. I just don’t see the “cross” that would allow me to move sections. Any suggestions? thank you
Hi Sadat, unfortunately, we cannot change the order of LinkedIn recommendations at the moment. I have no idea why LinkedIn put them all in one big heap, instead of displaying them with the relevant position like they used to. We were even to order them within each job. Lots of things that disappeared slowly return. Fingers crossed for this one!
What you can do! Create an image with the recommendation and display that with the appropriate job.
Hi, Is there a way that I can rearrange the entries in my “Volunteer Experience” section? I have 5 entries and would just like to rearrange the sequence they appear in. Thanks!
Hi Trisha,
They display in chronological order, so playing with the dates will change the order. You might also try if switching to “single date option” gives you more flexibility in your volunteer section.
Hi Petra
I just entered a new volunteer role, and it has not moved to the top even though it is the most recent. Thoughts?
Hi Petra,
The ability to reorder my profile sections in LinkedIn sadly is temporarily unavailable. I can’t rearranging sections on my profile. I think this is not good I can’t rearranging the subsections too.
Hopefully LinkedIn can solve this soon.
Best regards,
Yose
With the roll out of the new interface features sometimes work, sometimes they don’t and come back. Some also disappear. I yet have to check it all and see if this post needs rewriting. In the meantime, if things are not working, please contact LinkedIn themselves. They have a help option for you to reach out to them.
Hi,
I would like to rearrange the certifications in my linkedin profile, but cannot find the previous double-headed arrow sign to do it.
What to do now?
You should be able to move the whole section to a different spot, but not change the order of the different certifications. If you have the new LinkedIn interface, then it might be that dragging and dropping is gone altogether, although I hope not. I haven’t got it yet myself.
Is it possible to arrange posts in linked-in? I realize they are categorized by date of publishing but … is there a way to arrange due to preference?
Hi Richard, posts are always displayed in order of posting. Just as you realised. We do not have an option to change this ourselves. Who knows LinkedIn might change this is the future.
I just discovered this feature today. I love it. There certainly are things displayed much lower than I want, by default, and vice versa.
However, is there a way to move sections to the sidebar? Thing is, I have so many relevant and important sections on my profile, you need to scroll down quite a bit to see it all. It would be much better if I could display, say, my awards etc at the top on the sidebar.
Hey Josh,
That would be nice, wouldn’t it? But no such luck. Just like no real formatting. Part of the strenght of LinkedIn, is the uniformity. Makes it easy to scan multiple profiles. Whilst they keep the side bar off limits, at least you can drag sections to the top or bottom to suit your preference.

Hi petra,
Nice article.
But I seem to be unable to move my jobs with recommendations around.
It means, the “drag-bar” doesn’t appear when I hover my cursor over those jobs.
Please suggest any workaround if possible.
Thanks,
Mudassir
Jobs appear in chronological order. There is no way to alter that. If you have multiple ‘current positions’ you can rearrange them. Also, if you have multiple recommendations on one postion, you can organise in which way to display those recommendations.
Hello Petra,
How to move the following TWO to the bottom of my LinkedIn Profile
1) All posts to Bottom of my Linkedin Profile. ( I want the Summary to be the Topmost )
2) Volunteer experience, Volunteer Opportunities, Patents, Test Scores, Organizations, Courses…. to BOTTOM of my profile
Best Regards,
Suresh
Hi Suresh, have a look at the first picture in this blog post. I nthe top right, I hightlighted a double-headed arrow by drawing an orange rectangle around it. You will find this same option in the Summary section, so you can drag that up. Next use the same option to drag the other section you mention down to the bottom.
Thank You!
I Chrome I needed to move my cursor to the left side of the page and it gave me a drag and drop option!
Tricky isn’t it? If you look at the illustrations above you see that for moving sections you need to be in the top right corner. In those sections where you can move content within the section you need to be on the left side.
Hmmm, I recently wrote a post on LInkedin and unfortunately it is the only section that cannot be moved.
Any ideas how to fix this?
Posts sit in the top of your profile. They are not something that you can move around. Personally I quite like them there, as they showcase your knowledge. Where would you prefer posts you’ve written if you had a choice?
Posts should be link any other LinkedIn section for moving. I just did my first post only to find out I can’t move it.
The first thing I want someone to see if my Pic-Headline then summary
I want it at the bottom of my Profile- considering simply deleting the post
Interesting thought. Posts are the most dynamic part of your profile. Why would you not want them to be in view when people visit your profile?
I would like to have my summary above my Posts. I agree that the posts are interesting, but they are not the thing of most interest to a recruiter. It’s a shame that they can’t be moved.
I completely agree with David. I don’t want my posts to be the very first thing a potential client sees. I do a wide variety of writing and editing-related work, and the one post on my profile is relevant to only a narrow segment of my clientele. I’d rather have my summary appear first so that *everyone* who needs an editor can see what I’m able to do for them, not just creative writers who are working on a memoir…
I’d like to rearrange the order of my posts – appears to be impossible on 3 different browsers.
HI Neville,
Post always appear in order of publication, there is no way to move them around. You can move complete sections around (albeit, not the posts section). The only things you can move within a certain section are: in the experience section you can move the order of multiple current positions. In the recommendation section you can change the order of recommendations per job.
I confirm that it doesn’t work on Chrome (or sometimes it does…), but on Firefox it worked immediately.
This is so weird. I only use Chrome and it works without fail for me. Goes to show, when something doesn’t work, always try a different browser before looking for help.
Hello, I also do not have the ‘reorder section’ icon. Do you have any guidance?
When following through all the comments below, it seems to be hit and miss in different browsers. Strangely enough the commenters below have trouble in Chrome, whereas I use Chrome without any trouble.
Two questions
1. Are you in the profile edit mode?
2. Are you working on PC/Laptop or on a mobile device?
Linkedin is a very useful service. I have met many potential employers from this professional network. Another way to be in touch with your professional network is by using Linkedin Messenger
Since you’ve got this LinkedIn thing down, maybe you can help me out: I do not have that little cursor icon anywhere on my page to reorder sections. I know it used to be there, but since December 2014 it no longer exists. Any ideas on what’s going on with my page?
Please note, you can only rearrange multiple CURRENT positions. If you only have 1 current position, you cannot rearrange. This is because the profile is in chronological order. But if you have your own company and an employer, or a job and board-member position, then you can choose the order of those.
Just like Emily, I also don’t have the reorder section icon. 🙁
See the comment above in response to Emily.
Thanks so much for sharing this information with us. I have been wondering how to move those positions around within the Experience section now that the format has changed on LinkedIn.
My pleasure. If anything else ‘gets lost’ just let me know and I’ll do a little write up about it. I love these little surprises on LinkedIn, even though it is frustrating sometimes when things change, I love stumbling upon the changes 🙂
I do not have any of the rearranging icons either. Any clues?
You have to be in ‘edit’ mode to be able to rearrange. Then you can only reorder if you have multiple current positions, see my reply to the comment by Emily.
Try using a different browser. In my case, the rearranging icons don’t appear with Chrome but they do appear when using Safari.
Hi,
I have exactly the same issue, I am trying to rearrange sections (work experience/ projects/ skills) and the reorder icon had disappeared. I am not trying to re arrange within a section ( I have 2 current positions but happy with the ordering within the sections). I have tried this on both internet explorer and chrome. Chrome flashes the re order icon when it first loads the edit profile page but then disappears immediately.
Hi,
Tried with firefox and the reorder icon was visible. Issues with Ie and chrome.
Seems hit and miss with different browsers?Strangely enough I have no trouble at all in Chrome (nor in Explorer).
